Billionaire businessman Chris Kirubi is readying to harvest tonnes of bananas which will be exclusively sold through the Twiga Foods network, the company’s founder Peter Njonjo confirmed.
The bananas are growing at Kirubi’s expansive Bendor Farm which is located in Murang’a County, Gatanga Constituency.
Njonjo, a former senior executive with Coca Cola and Harvard-educated businessman announced this during the visit to the farm accompanied by Kirubi. “…all produce (is) dedicated to Twiga Foods,” he tweeted. Kirubi’s 700-acre farm, which he bought from a bank auction, has coffee, bananas and avocados. He also rears goats and indigenous chicken.
How Twiga Foods is changing food marketing
Twiga Foods buys fresh produce from farmers, which it then warehouses and distributes to food vendors in various cities and towns.
Farmers take their produce at a collection point near their farms where the price for a particular commodity is displayed. Produce is weighed in kilograms. The same is delivered to the vendors, enabling them to cut transport costs to farms and fresh wholesale markets.
In November last year, the company made a call for suppliers of fresh vegetables and fruits, including but not limited to potatoes, onions, tomatoes and watermelons.
