Kenya Power And Lighting Company (KPLC) is the company synonymous with electric power in Kenya, being the sole distributor of electricity in the county.
In addition to electricity distribution to industry, offices, schools, hospitals, and domestic users, Kenya Power also offers optic fiber connectivity to telecommunication companies through its optical fiber cable network that runs along its high voltage power lines across the country mainly to manage the national power grid.
In the recent past, there have been controversies about the shareholding for the utility company, which is listed with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

At times, a section of Kenyans have touted former Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta as the biggest individual shareholder in the company. However, according to a recent audit, Varsani Suresh Naran Ratna is the biggest individual shareholder with over 17 million shares.
The Kenyan government, through the Treasury Ministry, is the major shareholder of Kenya Power with over 50 percent of shares (978 492 034 shares).
