The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has granted taxpayers who sought relief for penalties and interests for the period to December 31, 2022.
The taxman has waived a total of Ksh209 billion through its Tax Amnesty Program.
In a statement by KRA, some 227,071 taxpayers applied for the program after accruing penalties of up to Ksh209 as of 31 December 2022.
The tax amnesty program grants a waiver for taxpayers who have incurred penalties and interests, allowing them to pay only the principal tax.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is pleased to report that so far as of 20th February 2024, 227,071 Taxpayers have benefited from waiver of penalties and interest amounting to Ksh209 billion under the ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme having paid a total of Ksh14.5 billion in principal taxes,” stated KRA.
“KRA reminds Taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes to take advantage of the amnesty programme. Further, Taxpayers who have not filed their returns for the amnesty period are urged to file the returns in order to benefit from the Tax Amnesty Programme,” added KRA.
The taxman also encouraged taxpayers with outstanding principal taxes to utilize the opportunity of the amnesty program to get a reprieve.
“We also encourage Taxpayers with ongoing tax disputes to expedite resolution of their cases within the Amnesty period by considering out-of-court settlements through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) framework,” added the Revenue Authority.
“This will enable them to take advantage of the ongoing Tax Amnesty, noting that the provisions on waiver of penalties and interest and abandonment of taxes, were repealed by the Finance Act, 2023.”
In October 2023, KRA collected Ksh3.4 Billion from the tax amnesty programme.
Further, it had mapped 2.8 Million taxpayers who have penalties and interest and qualify for the tax amnesty programme.
