French retail chain Carrefour has opened a self-checkout service at its store at the Village Market.
This will bring to two, the total number of self-checkout services Carrefour has in Kenya after the inaugural at its Westage Mall branch last year.
Carrefour noted that the decision was based on receiving a 59 per cent customer satisfaction score, underpinning the significance of investing in technology.
“We have seen our customers enjoy reduced waiting time at the checkout counters, resulting in a more efficient shopping experience. Today, as we expand the service to our second store, we look forward to providing our customers with enhanced convenience,” said Christophe Orcet, Retail Regional Director of Majid Al Futtaim East Africa.
Carrefour operates a total of 22 stores in the country with Nairobi having 17, Mombasa three and Kisumu two stores.
“The ever-evolving retail industry requires consistent innovation and keeping up with customers’ demands. We plan to introduce self-checkout systems in more stores in the future as we strive to create seamless shopping experiences for all our customers,” added Orcet.
Responding to queries from the public on the self-checkout service rendering its employees jobless, the supermarket noted that “The main purpose of having self-checkout stations is to add to convenience the store, reducing long queues and a faster shopping experience. The cashier stations will still be available.”
