Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia has announced the acquisition of rural roads construction machinery that will enable the county to undertake massive roads improvement at a lower cost.
The machinery includes lorries, graders and excavators among others under the County Rural Roads Construction Units/ Programme are ready for the official launch slated for Tuesday next week.
“Once implemented, and successfully so, this rural roads improvement programme will see all our roads fully opened up and constructed to motorable standards within the next three years. We are glad for the support residents and all actors have shown towards this programme, and it will succeed,” Governor Kimemia said.
Rural roads improvement is one of the governor’s flagship projects. The machinery has been bought through funds won by the County Government – in 2018 and 2019, where the County was number two and one respectively – under the World Bank’s Kenya Devolution Support Programme which assesses a County’s prudent financial management and governance structures.
Launching of the machinery and construction units – clustered in five wards, will be done next week. A modern and real-time fleet management and control system has been deployed to ensure accountability and value for money.
The machinery will also help local contractors who have been struggling to hire such from the open market including the private sector and the National Youth Service.
“Majority of us do not have the machinery and rely on Government agencies including the National Youth Service. For us to have them in our county is a great plus and we are comforted that the County Government will honor the private sector share for roads to be constructed by external actors,” said John Gichagua Wanjohi the chairman of the contractors the proprietor of Sonic Construction company.
Governor Kimemia assured the contractors that they will get a share of the road construction works.
The roads programme will be operated under five construction units under 5-ward cluster. Each Cluster Unit has an excavator, a grader, a compactor, three trucks, a service van and fuel bowser.
Each of these cluster machines are capable of doing one kilometre per day resulting to 20-25 Kilometers per month translating to 100-125 kilometres across the five clusters.
The governor said the county can achieve 800 – 1,000 kilometres of all-weather roads per year. It is expected that it will take about three years to have all roads completed in the county.
