Magunas Supermarket chain has been ordered to withdraw a brand of white sugar from its shelves for allegedly giving false information about the product branded as Muganas White Sugar.
The order was made by the High Court Judge Lucy Gitari, at Kerugoya High Court on Thursday, following an application by Joseph Muriithi.
In a ruling certified as urgent, the judge ruled that; “An order for temporary injunction be and is hereby issued against the respondents and their agents from further manufacturing, packaging, stocking, distributing, supplying, selling in their retail shops or elsewhere…until the case is determined”
Muriithi, through his lawyer Macharia Wambui urged that failure by Magunas Supermarket chain to provide adequate information on the source and composition of the sugar exposes buyers to health hazards.
“The continued false representation as a food product branded as Magunas White Sugar but passed off as local sugar borders on illegality which ought to be reigned…”
In 2018, impounded sugar in Kenya was found to contain traces of mercury and heavy metals after tests by the Government Chemist.
